Sensel Family Ventures deploys patient, purpose-driven capital into small businesses across the Greater Dayton Area and beyond — backing entrepreneurs with strong leadership, deep roots, and the conviction that great businesses build great communities.
In the late 1970s, Karen Sensel was raising children and studying accounting part-time. Her husband's growing business kept getting timesheets too late in the day to process payroll on time. So she did what entrepreneurs do — she solved it. Early Express Mail Services started as a one-woman morning pickup operation, run before her morning classes.
It didn't stay small. Customers kept asking for more — bank deposit runs, mail sorting, envelope stuffing, eventually large-scale print and fulfillment. The company grew steadily into a professional service operation that still exists today, in its third generation of family leadership.
Frank's path ran in parallel. A banker by training with no sales experience, he founded Crown Services of Dayton in 1971, took Dale Carnegie courses to learn how to sell, and built a regional staffing company with integrity and grit. He eventually sold to his leadership team.
When Karen received her inheritance years later, she made an unusual choice: rather than deploy those resources for comfort or consumption, she reinvested them into the kind of entrepreneurship that had built her own life. That decision is how Sensel Family Ventures was born.
When asked where her entrepreneurial instinct came from, Karen put it plainly: "We're just problem solvers."
What We Believe
Capital with purpose and patience.
We're not chasing multiples. We're building something that lasts — and we partner with entrepreneurs who feel the same way. Profit is not our primary motive, but we believe disciplined investing and aligned values generate meaningful returns, both financial and social, for generations to come.
We operate with deep respect for the entrepreneurial journey and a long-term view that most capital sources won't afford you.
"A typical fund has seven years to exit. We have a hundred."
Nine stars in rising formation.
Two bright anchor stars — Frank and Karen. Seven dimmer stars for the grandchildren. The constellation isn't decoration. It's the structure of our thinking and a depiction of our values: lift the next generation higher than your own.
What We Look For
Six things we care about more than the pitch deck.
We evaluate businesses through the lens of leadership character, community alignment, and long-term viability — not financial projections alone. Here's what actually matters to us.
01
Strong Leadership
We back the founder first. Character, resilience, and self-awareness matter more than any credential or track record.
02
Community Roots
Your business should strengthen the place you're in. We prioritize companies with genuine ties to the Greater Dayton Area and similar communities.
03
Aligned Values
We're a values-driven fund. We want founders who care about doing business with integrity — not just doing business.
04
Viable Economics
We're patient, not naive. We expect a clear path to scalability. Healthy economics create healthy communities.
05
Long-Term Orientation
We're not a quick-exit vehicle. If you're optimizing for a 24-month flip, we're not the right partner. We're here for the long haul.
06
A Shared Conversation
We're at our best when there's mutual trust and honest dialogue. We don't need a seat at every table — we just want to be genuinely useful when it matters.

How We're Different
We are not a venture capital firm.
What we are
A family fund with a multigenerational horizon
Patient capital — not managing a fund cycle
Relationship-first, terms second
Focused on community economic health
Willing to back businesses other capital ignores
Honest about what we don't know
What we are not
Chasing unicorns or hockey-stick growth
Requiring a 10x return to justify the investment
Looking for a quick exit or acquisition flip
Passive capital that disappears after the wire
Backing businesses without local or regional roots
Interested in businesses that operate without values

Sensel Family Ventures, LLC ("we" or "the Fund") is committed to ensuring that our website, senselfamilyventures.com, is accessible to all visitors, including individuals with disabilities. We believe that every person should be able to access information about our mission and activities with ease, and we strive to provide an inclusive digital experience.
2. Standards We Follow
We work to align our website with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at conformance Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). WCAG 2.1 AA is the technical standard referenced by the U.S. Department of Justice in its 2024 rulemaking under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act and is widely recognized as the benchmark for digital accessibility under Title III of the ADA.
These guidelines are organized around four principles: content should be Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust. We apply these principles to the extent practicable.
3. Applicable Law
Federal: Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
Title III of the ADA prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in places of public accommodation. Federal courts have increasingly interpreted Title III to extend to websites and digital services. The Department of Justice's April 2024 final rule under Title II formally adopted WCAG 2.1 AA as the technical standard for state and local government web content, reinforcing WCAG 2.1 AA as the prevailing benchmark for digital accessibility across contexts.
State: Ohio Revised Code Chapter 4112
Ohio's civil rights statute, Ohio Revised Code Chapter 4112, prohibits unlawful discriminatory practices on the basis of disability in places of public accommodation, employment, and housing. While Chapter 4112 does not contain a specific digital accessibility mandate, its broad protections against disability-based discrimination are consistent with the ADA's framework.
Local
The City of Dayton does not currently maintain a separate digital accessibility ordinance beyond its general adherence to federal ADA requirements. We monitor local developments and will adjust our practices if the City of Dayton or Montgomery County adopts additional standards.
4. Platform and Design
Our website uses semantic HTML, supports keyboard navigation, and is designed to be screen-reader compatible. We have selected a simple site design with consistent navigation to support ease of use across the Site.
5. Known Limitations
We are committed to addressing accessibility issues within our control promptly. If you encounter a barrier, please reach out using the contact information below.
